Batik is a relatively simple method of wax resist on fabric and using dyes to introduce colour. The best results can be found in the images that include many layers of wax and colour, and the method is a brilliant alternative to painting as it incorporates many of the same techniques but offers the opportunity to enhance and embellish the final piece. My work is quite experimental, and I am greatly influenced by fabric and pattern, however, as the technique is so diverse it offers itself to any subject matter, effective when simple and often outstanding when more detailed.
I have run day long workshops in high schools and residential homes for mental health patients of various ages. I also have future bookings at youth centres running weekly evening classes. The workshops are quite flexible with regards to time. Obviously the longer you have the more detailed the final piece will be, but even the simple pieces are effective, and the method of batik is brilliant fun for all ages. In the lessons I introduce skills and traditional techniques that I learnt in Sri Lanka, show and talk about a selection of my work and examples from abroad. I also spend time doing demonstrations and working with the individual children to help them to develop their work.
I live in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, but would be prepared to travel a reasonable distance to you if travel expenses are reimbursed.
